Jimmie Johnson Takes the Pole and Sets a New Track Record at Phoenix International Raceway

Avondale, ARIZ. (November 8, 2013) – Hendrick Motorsports’ Jimmie Johnson rolled in to Phoenix in the lead in the Chase with 2342 points.  During Friday’s qualifying, Johnson set out to qualify after 40 other teams made their laps.  Jimmie left the pits hot, putting some heat in his tires on the back stretch.  Johnson not only took the pole during his qualifying run, but he also set a new track record with a 139.22 mph, 25.858 second lap around the one mile track.

Johnson’s Coors Light pole award was his third for the 2013 season.  It was his second at Phoenix and the 32nd overall.  Seven of Johnson’s 24 wins in Chase races have come from the pole.

Denny Hamlin qualified in 2nd, Joey Logano 3rd, Kyle Bush 4th, Jeff Gordon 5th, Clint Boyer 6th, Kasey Kahne 7th, Kurt Bush 8th, Kevin Harvick 9th, and Martin Truex Jr 10th.

Joe Gibbs Racings’ Matt Kenseth, currently 2nd in NASCAR Sprint Cup points will start 14th in Sundays race.

Joe Gibbs Racing’s Matt Kenseth and the #20 are 2nd in the points standings with 2335 points.  Richard Childress Racing and the #29 of Kevin Harvick are in 3rd place with 2302 points.  Kyle Bush, another Joe Gibbs Racing driver and the # 18 are in 4th place with 2290 points.  Rounding out the top 5 is Hendrick Motorsports and the #88 of Dale Earnhardt Jr. with 2280 points.  Jeff Gordon, Clint Boyer, Greg Biffle. Joey Logano and Kurt Bush round out the top 10.
