Qualifying and Elimination Rounds for the the NHRA Division 7 Cut Short by Rain on Saturday

2014 Division 7 Season Opener Qualifying from Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park

Chandler, ARIZ. (March 1, 2014) – It was “Dragsters on Parade” as the day concluded with rain during qualifying for the NHRA Division 7 Lucas Oil Drag Racing Season Opener at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park Saturday afternoon.  With much of the Valley getting hammered throughout the day, the track somehow went unaffected by the weather for much of the day.

Division 7 race Director Mike Rice tells us that there were 456 entries into this weekend’s race.  Just over 100 of those were Super Comp entries.

The Valley of the Sun it was not today.  Though qualifying resumed in the morning, it did so under ominous skies.  Those skies would later open up, heavy rains would soak the track just as Super Comp returned to the tree.  The rain would send just over 100 dragsters down the return road and back to the pits while track officials waited for the rain to stop.  Once the rain stopped, crews began drying and preparing tracks surface so racing could resume.  Mother Nature had other plans though.  Just as the cars were about to be called back to the staging lanes, the skies let loose and the remainder of the racing was put off until Sunday.

Unfortunately, local drag racer Clyde Williams broke a rear suspension component during Saturday’s qualifying for Top Sportsman.  Clyde’s ’63 Corvette took a hard left from the right lane and nosed into the wall.  We hear Clyde was up an walking after the incident.  We wish him well with repairs to his car and look forward to seeing him back out on the track.
