The Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series Valley of the Sun Spring Nationals from the Lake at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park

Chandler, ARIZ. (April 13, 2014) – The Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series kicked off its 2014 tour this weekend at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park with the Valley of the Sun Spring Nationals.  With qualifying on Friday and Saturday, Top Fuel Hydro, Top Alcohol Hydro, Top Alcohol Flat, Pro Mod and more put the screws to the lake for position in Sunday’s final elimination rounds.

Throughout qualifying, the Top Fuel Hydro boats thrilled the fans with flame throwing detonating engines at they competed for the number one qualifying spot.  Eddie Knox racing’s Problem Child, piloted by 2013 Champion Daryl Ehrlich, would take that spot with ease.  EKR ran hard and looked like they never left last years pace.

Working through elimination rounds throughout the day on Sunday, Problem Child would face the Spirit of Texas in the final rounds of eliminations.  Knox added some power to the boat for the final run down the lake.  It may have been too much as Ehrlich had to pedal off the the start giving the Scotty Lumbert and the Spirit of Texas an early advantage.  Once the boat settled down, Problem Child made a hard charge, chasing down Scotty Lumbert.  Scotty and the Spirit of Texas would make it to the 1,000 foot mark just before Ehrlich, taking the first Top Fuel Hydro win of the 2014 season.  Lumbert ran a 3.60 at 239.23 mph against Ehrlich’s 3.80 at 248.83 mph.

Bob Pizza and the What a Tomato took an easy win in Top Alcohol after his opponent encountered difficulties shortly after leaving the line.  Pizza ran a 4.44 at 204.13 mph for the win.

The 2014 Lucas Oil Drag Boat Racing Series "Run for the Ring" Kicks off at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park
In Top Alcohol Flat, Tommy Thompson and the Lucas Oil sponsored boat would meet Randy Ball and the Oklahoman on the rope in the finals.  Thompson would experience problems during the run, giving Ball an easy victory.  The Oklahoman ran a 5.83 at 143 mph.

Travis Tuttle and the Short Fuse would meet Tod MacAnally and Mayhem on the starting line for the final round of eliminations in Pro Mod.  After running a 7.12 at 156 mph, Travis Tuttle would take the win.

In Crockerbox Pro, Brandon Brodecki, with the assistance of spotter Craig Murpyh, would pilot the P-74 to a win in every race of the day, dominating the class in the season opener on the lake at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.
