Images Captured by Gil Rebilas that Made Drag Racing History

Al Segrini driving his “Brute” sponsored car had this huge blower explosion in the final round against Tim Grose at the Winter Nationals in 1984.  I was shooting 400 asa film and was very skeptical about putting it through any of the detectors at the airport.  The security agents put up quit a bit of resistance, but was not going to give in!  They allowed me to pass that roll of film around the x-ray machine to an agent on the other end.  After processing the film myself in my own darkroom, I was really surprised to see how much fire there actually was.   They say, “if you don’t see it through your viewfinder, you got it.”  On the other hand,”if you saw it, you didn’t get it!”

Larry Dixon in 1995, had this boomer at the Winter Nationals in Pomona, California!
