The 2015 Bell Lexus Copperstate 1000 Heads Towards the High Country on Day One of its Thousand Mile Trek

The 2015 Copperstate 1000 Heads Towards the High Country

Maricopa County, ARIZ. (April 18, 2015 – For the past 25 years, classic automobile enthusiasts from across the United States and afar have gathered in the Phoenix Metropolitan area to participate in the Bell Lexux Copperstate 1000, a 1,000 mile, multi-day drive across Arizona’s scenic back country.

Saturday morning, participants put their classics, exotics and American muscle cars on display on the field at Tempe Diablo Stadium before setting off on their journey.  By early afternoon, the cars were fired up, leaving one after the other as spectators gathered on the streets surrounding the stadium to take in the sights, sounds and smells that can only be seen once a year.

Today, those participating in the Copperstate 1000 would begin their first of five days on the road by heading north on State Route 87, working their way out of the Valley’s heat as they traveled up to Payson.

The 2015 Copperstate 1000 Heads Towards the High CountryArizona Auto Scene was fortunate enough to catch these beauties out on the open road.  There’s nothing like seeing and hearing the roar of a vintage Ferrari or Shelby passing you by, leaving behind the smell of high octane race fuel in the desert air.

At least two cars would fall short of making it to their final destination on Saturday under their own power.  We spotted a Shelby Cobra and a Jaguar on the back of flatbeds long before making it out of the Valley.  Not to worry, the Copperstate 1000 crews not only have the tow trucks with them during their entire drive, but they also have qualified mechanics on hand to take care of minor repairs.

The Men’s Art Council (MAC) of the Phoenix Art Museum organizes the Copperstate 1000 Vintage Car Road Rally.  Admission into the (MAC) is exclusive and by invitation only.  Since 2002, the Men’s Arts Council has contributed in excess of $9 million to the Phoenix Arts Museum.

Bell Lexus was the Title Sponsor of the 2015 Copperstate 1000.  E.D. Marshall Jewelers, RM Auctions, IOI Pay, Hunter Engineering Company, AAA of Arizona, the Arizona Highway Patrol, the Arizona Concours, British Auto Repair, Cyberitas Technologies, Gooding & Company, Hagerty, McPherson College of Automotive Restoration, Ed Mell, Moonshine Car Care Products, the Phoenix Art Museum and UHaul also contributed to making this year’s Copperstate 1000 possible.

Mesa’s Dirk Howard captured the Field of Dreams, Cruise-In and some of the Copperstate 1000’s cars out on the road near the Fort McDowell Casino.  Scroll down to check out some of Dirk’s photos from Saturday’s Copperstate 1000.
