Famoso Raceway Funny Car Crash Claims the Life of Roger Garten

Bakersfield, Calif. (June 28, 2015) – Saturday Night Nitro at Auto Club Raceway Famoso is supposed to send fans home with memories created by the excitement of watching courageous pilots launch their nitro fueled nostalgia Funny Cars down the quarter mile, but Saturday night would be different as the Funny Cars of Matt Bynum and Roger Garten got together around the 330 foot mark.  After colliding, the cars went in separate directions, crashing violently down the track.

Initial reports were that both drivers were OK, but that would turn out not to be the case as Roger Garten succumbed to injuries sustained in the crash at a local hospital.

Garten was the original driver of the Tocco-Harper-Garten AA/FA car from 1973 to 1975, beginning with the 1973 Winternationals in Pomona and retiring after winning the 1975 NHRA Division 7 Championship.

After a 35 year hiatus from the sport, Garten found and restored the original Tocco-Harper-Garten AA/FA into the Warhorse and put it back on the track at the 2010 March Meet.

Besides his team, Garten leaves behind his wife Charlene and kids Rhonda and Dan.

Roger will be truly missed at the dragstrips he raced at.

Godspeed to you and Rest in Peace Roger Garten!
