Ringing in 2016 with the Hangover Nationals at Tucson Dragway

The 2016 Hangover Nationals from Jim Hughes' Tucson Dragway

Tucson, ARIZ. (January 1, 2015) – As Arizona’s motorsports and auto enthusiasts roll into 2016, many celebrated the New Year by participating in the Hangover Nationals at the newly re-branded Tucson Dragway, a project masterminded by Jim Hughes.

Dedicated drag racers from across  our state made their way to South East Tucson Thursday and Friday to take part in the Hangover Nationals, an event formerly hosted by the late Speedworld Dragstrip.

Running a Track Madness format, the racers who had the best reaction times, combined with being closest to their dial moved ahead in the competition.  Motorcycles were paired against door cars. Super Gas cars against Super Comp cars, the dial didn’t matter as long as the drivers ran close to their number.  Both cars left at the same time when the tree dropped.  Drivers had to bring their game for the tree and their rides had to perform to the tee to run the number.  Half of the field was on the trailer after round one.  As the day progressed, the field was again cut in half after pass down the dragstrip.

Barring a little wind, it was a great day of racing in some of Arizona’s best weather.  Driving his ’70 Ford Maverivk, Tucson’s Matthew Hawk would take home the first place trophy from first Track Madness at the inaugural Hangover Nationals.  Lake Havasu City’s Anthony Galati was the runner up in his 1990 Super Gas Chevrolet Corvette.

Jim Hughes has done an excellent job with securing the lease for the track.  The re-branded facility looks awesome.  We wish jim success and look forward to many more events at Tucson Dragway.

Also, thanks to Bob Stose and the Safety Crew from Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park for stepping up and filling in a much needed void to make the Hangover Nationals a success!
