High School Students from across Arizona Compete in the 24th annual High School Pit Crew Challenge

Chandler, ARIZ. (February 19,2016) – Sponsored by the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving, UTI, Snap-On, Lincoln College of Technology, and CARQUEST Auto Parts Chandler, fifteen teams from seven high schools from across the state took in the 24th annual High School Pit Crew Challenge held at the Bob Bondurant School of High Performance Driving Friday.

High School Students from across Arizona Compete in the 24th annual High School Pit Crew ChallengeWith some of the old Camaro fleet from Bondurant and engines brought in by UTI, the teams competed in such tasks as getting a driver ready to race.  The driver had to be suited and zipped into the fire suit, helmet on and buckled, seat belt on and buckled, a driver change and hands on the steering wheel.

Using the engines brought in by UTI, the teams had to change 8 spark plugs, install a distributor cap and rotor and spark plug wires in the correct firing order, and change the oil filter.  Points were deducted for broken or stripped spark plugs and spark plug wires out of order.

In the wheel department, tires had to be rotated from front to back and the lug nuts had to be torqued to spec.  Points were deducted for cross threaded lug nuts and lug nuts not torqued.

Under the hood, the students has to locate and remove the power steering cap and show it to the judge.

For the third year in a row it would be a team from Marana High School to take first place with a time of 2:54.  They also received the Spirit award.

The Dobson Mustangs took second place with a time of 4:16.

The Skyline Green Team took third place.

The all female team of the Dobson Dolls took the award for best dressed.

Coming all the way from the Fort Apache Reservation in Northwestern Arizona, the team from Alchesay High School to the award for farthest traveled.

Mike Kerr, Bill Schneider, Darielle Moody, UTI and more did an outstanding job putting together this year’s Arizona High School Pit Crew Challenge.

Bondurant has already offered up their facility for the 2017 Pit Crew Challenge.
