PIR IndyCar Free Prix View This Saturday: by Keith Jones

This Saturday is your chance to get a sneak peek at the 2016 Verizon IndyCar Series when all the teams are in town for testing at Phoenix International Raceway. It will be the first time on the track for many of the drivers.

With free admission on Saturday, Feb. 27, gates open at 11:30 a.m. and fans can watch drivers on track for testing sessions from 12 – 3 p.m. and again from 5 – 8 p.m. under the lights. The test is a warm-up for the Phoenix Grand Prix on April 1-2.

If you’ve only seen stock cars at PIR, get ready for eye-opening speed as lap times will be considerably faster. Live timing and scoring is available during the test at

Originally build for open wheel racing, PIR hosted 61 IndyCar races from 1964 through 2005. Two previous Phoenix IndyCar race winners – Helio Castroneves (2002) and Tony Kanaan (2003) – are among the 21 drivers slated to test this weekend.

Drivers will also be available for an autograph session on the Fan Midway from 3:45 – 4:30 p.m. Drivers will be separated into two (2) groups with one-hundred (100) wristbands distributed for each line.

Fans can obtain an autograph wristband from the PIR Booth beginning at 11:30 a.m. while supplies last. In addition to seeing the first public appearance of the Indy cars on track, fans will also be able to snap photos with the IndyCar Show Car.

Parking for the Prix View Verizon IndyCar Series Test Session is free and can be found by following directional signage. Concessions will be open on the Fan Midway at the Allison Grandstands and tickets for the Phoenix Grand Prix IndyCar race can be purchased on-site in the Octane Elevator Lobby.

Tickets for the Phoenix Grand Prix range in price from $35-70, and each ticket will include access to Pit Road. Tickets for children are $10; and active-duty military members and veterans will receive discounted pricing. Fans can purchase tickets online at and by phone at 866-408-RACE (7223).
