Jr. Dragster Racers Compete for a Wally at Tucson Dragway


Tucson, ARIZ. (April 27, 2016) – Jr. Dragster drivers and their families from all across Arizona made their was to Tucson Dragway this past weekend to compete in the NHRA Jr. Challenge, a double-header that would push these young drivers to their limits as they sought to make it to two final elimination rounds in one day.  The first win would be for cash and the second would be for the coveted Wally.

In the Jr. Dragster 13 – 17 class, Marana’s Samantha Kidd would show that she was on her game, making it to both final elimination rounds.  Samantha faced off against Chandler’s Joey Petrone in one of the finals.  Joey would get off the line first with a .030 light against Samatha’s .095.  Petrone went on the run a 8.004 at 74.87 mph on a 7.90 dial for the win.  Kidd ran a 8.084 at 79.99 mph on a 7.98 dial.

In her second final elimination round, Kidd would be competing in an all female final as she met Vail’s Kendra Holly at the tree.  When the tree dropped, Holly would be the first to leave with a .041 light against Kidd’s .056.  At the top end, it would be Kidd taking the win light after running a 8.203 at 78.31 mph on a 8.02 dial.  Holly ran a 8.132 at 80.33 mph on a 7.90 dial.

Samatha’s performance on the dragstrip this weekend would ultimately earn her a Wally.  Congratulations!

One of the Jr. Dragster 8 – 12 finals saw Surprise’s Kade Renoll and Tucson’s Keeli Tatge meeting on the starting line.  Renoll got off the line first with a .160 reaction time against Tatge’s .318.  Kade would go on to run a 12.989 at 47.32 mph on a 12.72 dial for the win.  Tatge ran faster with 9.204 at 73.15 mph on a 9.08 dial, but it wouldn’t be enough.  Kade Renoll would win his first Jr. Dragster event.


In the second Jr. Dragster 8 – 12 final, El Mirage’s Dylan Winefsky would face Casa Grande’s Tripp Breitkreitz.  Tripp got off the line first with a .160 against Dylan’s .240.  Breitkreitz ran a 9.227 at 70.70 mph on a 8.90 dial, taking home the Wally in the process.  Winefsky ran a 9.743 at 68.48 mph on a 9.38 dial.

A big shout out to both Track Owner Jim Hughes and Track Manager Matthew DeYoung.  Jim Hughes fired up his favorite BBQ, feeding the kids throughout the day and later taking them aver to the Pima County Fairgrounds for some rides and games.  Class act all the way!


Congratulations to all of those who competed in the NHRA Jr. Challenge this weekend at Tucson Dragway.  Remember, it’s not necessarily about winning and losing, it’s about achieving personal goals and becoming part of something bigger that you are.
