Corvette Sold to Finance Custom Home Resurfaces at Barrett-Jackson

Scottsdale, ARIZ. (January 21, 2019) – Some time during the early 80’s, Dan and Sarah Furbee purchased a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette convertible.  The car was a numbers matching 427 ci, 425 hp four-speed from the factory.

Dan drove the car for a year before the e-brake malfunctioned.  He took it in for repairs and ended up deciding to just go ahead and restore the car.  A frame off restoration had soon begun.  The car wasn’t in too bad of shape and the restoration shop was able to complete the project in just eight weeks.  He got a personalized license plate for the car, BLK – RAT, for Black Rat.

Dan and Sarah enjoyed the the Vette for many years and begrudgingly sold it about 16 years ago to finance the build of a custom home in the East Valley.  Life went on without the ’66 Corvette for Dan and Sarah.

Last week, a friend of Dan’s called him and and told him his car was up for auction at Barrett-Jackson.  Dan asked “what car?” and was informed it was the Black Rat.  Sure enough, after looking at Barrett-Jackson’s online catalog, the VIN was a match.  It was also part of the 2019 Scottsdale auction’s Salon Collection, Lot 1323.

After learning about this story we decided to check out the car on Saturday, prior to it rolling across the block to another owner.  While taking photos of the car in the tent we met Chaz McLaughlin.  After speaking with Chaz, we learned that he was also there with an interest in the ’66 Corvette as his father, Jim was also a previous owner of the car.

It was difficult to determine whether Dan or Jim owned the car first, but the BLK – RAT front license plate and a buffing burn on the paint on the right rear of the cowl would indicate it was Dan’s paint job that still remained on the car.  Whoever owned it after Dan and Sarah had also added side pipes, knock-off wheels and gold line tires.

Shortly after meeting with Chaz, Barrett-Jackson’s crew arrived for the car to take it to the lanes.  After some final detailing it was time for it to roll across the Barrett-Jackson auction block.  It hammered at 140k.

Scroll down to check out some photos of the Vette.
