Torrence, Johnson Jr. and Enders Win the Pro Classes at the NHRA Arizona Nationals

Chandler, ARIZ. (February 23, 2020) – Qualifications for the NHRA Arizona Nationals began Friday.  Most of Saturday was rained out, but Sunday would see great weather for an awesome day of racing at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park.

Elimination rounds kicked off with NHRA Top Fuel teams rolling onto the starting line to kick off the event.  Both Pro and Sportsman teams would race throughout the day, each round putting an opponent onto the trailer as the winner would move on to the next round.

One of the more exciting rounds of the day was when team CAPCO’s Steve and Billy Torrence paired in the third round of eliminations.  Billy left on a .095 light against Steve’s .067.  Steve ran a 3.698 at 329.58 mph for the win.  Billy ran a 3.699 at 329.51 mph.  It doesn’t get much closer than that.

In Top Fuel, Doug Kalitta would face No. 1 qualifier Steve Torrence in the finals.  When the tree dropped, both Kalitta and Torrence cut identical .066 lights.  Torrence took the win with a 3.679 against Kalitta’s 4.052.

Funny Car saw Jack Beckman and Tommy Johnson Jr. meeting in the finals.  Beckman spun giving the win to Johnson Jr’s 3.883, 326.40 mph pass.

The final round of Pro Stock saw Bo Butner facing off against Erica Enders.  Both left on a .033 light.  Enders ran a 6.531 a 210.44 mph for the win against Butner’s 6.606.

The Arizona Big Tire Shootout was the first final Sportsman elimination round to be run.  Brian Manske and Mary Baltzell, both driving Pontiac Firebirds made it to the finals.  Manske running a turbo against Baltzell’s nitrous powered Terminator.  In the 1/8th mile heads up race, Manske got out of shape and nosed into the wall.  Baltzell took the win.  Manske was not injured in the crash.


Jay Turner and Rickey House raced their way into the finals for Top Fuel Harley.  House went red by -.100 giving the win to Turner.  Turner had trouble during the run, running a 9.054 at 99.99, but it was enough to take home the Wally.

Comp Eliminator drag racers Doug Lambeck and Dean Carter met in the finals.  Carter took the win with his small bock powered dragster.

Super Stock saw Justin Lamb and Ky Rizzoli meeting at the starting line in the finals.  Rizzoli, running on a 9.47 dial left on a .001 light.  Lamb, running on a 8.87 dial left on a .042 light.  Rizzoli ran a 9.479 at 114.03 against Lamb’s 8.872, 149.40 mph pass for the win.

In Stock Eliminator, Brad Burton and John Irving paired for the finals.  Burton went home with the Wally.

Top Sportsman racers Ed Olpin and Paul Mitsos ran in the final elimination round.  Olpin got off the line first, but Mitsos chased him down, taking the win by .028.

In Top Dragster, Phil Unruh and Art Hoover met at the tree.  Hoover took the win at the stripe.

Super Gas saw Edwin Olpin Jr. and Matthew Larson paired in the finals.  Running on a 9.90 index, Olpin Jr. left on a .001 light to Larson’s .052.  In a hole shot win, Olpin Jr. took the win running a 9.943 to Larson’s 9.932.

Running on an 8.90 index, Super Comp drivers Val Torres and Cal Belden would face each other in the final round of eliminations.  When the tree dropped, Belden went red by -.005, handing both the win and the Wally to Torres.
